TAUNTON -- A 16-year-old boy faces a murder charge this morning stemming from the shooting death of a 40-year-old woman who was playing with her grandson in a popular park Wednesday night.
The name of the suspect was not released, but a spokesman for the Bristol County district attorney's office said the boy was to be arraigned in Taunton District Court.
The victim, Lisa Costa of 57 First St., was playing with her 2-year-old grandson in Memorial Park when she was shot once in the chest around 8:15 p.m., police said.
The bullet came from a wooded area near the park, which is in the middle of a residential area.
Police combed the park and the woods with police dogs in search of a weapon but it was unclear this morning whether a weapon was found or what lead to the suspect's arrest.
Police said only one shot was heard.
Costa died during surgery and was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m.
Her grandson was believed to be with family members, according to police.
The shooting occurred when there was still daylight and other people in the park, police said.
In the past, police have responded to minor complaints about park safety and regularly patrol the area.
Taunton police this morning were referring calls to the Bristol County district attorney's office. Ed Sirois, a spokesman, said he had no details on the incident.
