Heeding the call

ATTLEBORO -- The Rev. Robert Hett well remembers the moment he sensed a call to ministry.

He was 12 years old and attending a summer youth program at the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center in his home state of New Hampshire.

`` I felt God tapping me on the shoulder,'' Hett said. `` He was saying, `I want you in Christian ministry.' I never questioned it.''

That led him to ministering and preaching in youth programs at his church, and eventually to earning a bachelor's of arts degree in theology from Berkshire Christian College in Lenox, and to ordination in 1964 in Peacedale, R.I.

From there, his ministry took him to various states and through a range of experiences across the country until this May, when he became the new pastor at Advent Christian Church on Pleasant Street in Attleboro.

On Sunday, Aug. 29, he will be officially installed there at a 4 p.m. service that will be attended by pastors and officials of his denomination, the Advent Christian General Conference. Also participating will be the Rev. Don Wiegand of nearby Faith Alliance Church.

Hett and Wiegand have already established a spiritual and ministerial relationship and plan to work together on programs and issues in the future.

That is only the start of the connection that Hett would like to establish with other pastors of evangelical churches. He hopes to help strengthen the evangelical presence in the area, and would like to draw pastors together for prayer and support.

Reaching out to other churches

He also would like to connect with the Attleboro Area Council of Churches, an organization that has long hoped to attract more evangelical congregations. Hett said he is not sure if he will become a member, but has already made contact with the council, and has referred people to its programs such as the food kitchen.
