Newlyweds arrested in pot probe

NORTON - A Plain Street couple arrested on drug trafficking charges after police seized up to 90 pounds of marijuana and more than $200,000 cash were married three days ago.

But instead of jetting off to a warmer locale, Sebastian Pollack and his new wife, Bruna Juliana Santos, both 26, are now spending their honeymoon behind bars.

The newlyweds were ordered held in jail on $250,000 cash bail Friday, defendants in what authorities say is the largest marijuana and cash seizure in recent memory in the Attleboro area.

They pleaded innocent Friday in Attleboro District Court to charges of marijuana trafficking and drug conspiracy as police obtained an arrest warrant for a third suspect.

The couple - who authorities say do not have criminal records - was arrested in a raid at their home at 278 Plain St. Thursday afternoon by police executing a search warrant obtained after a two-month investigation.

Police estimate the street value of the marijuana at $300,000 and say a total of $218,000 cash was confiscated.

Authorities also seized scales and what they said were drug packaging materials and literature.

The investigation is still continuing and no new details about the probe were aired during a bail hearing or made public in court records.

The undercover probe was led by Norton Detective Todd Bramwell and Trooper Michael Smith, a state police detective with the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

They were assisted by officers with the Northern Bristol County Drug Task Force made up of Attleboro area police departments.

Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter praised the cooperative efforts of state and local police in the investigation and raid.

"Through this kind of cooperation and information sharing, we are making a major dent in the illegal drug trade in Bristol County," Sutter said.

Defense lawyers Daniel Rich of Norton and Alfred Puller of Attleboro filed paperwork appealing the bail to superior court.

If the suspects are released, Judge Robert E. Baylor ordered that they surrender their passports, submit to random drug tests and wear electronic monitoring bracelets.
