Crash shuts down Rte. 123
NORTON - If you were traveling Route 123 to or from Easton Friday, you had to find another route as the main road was shut down most of the day and night following a car crash that involved a utility pole.
The road was closed east of Interstate 495 near Newland Street after a car crashed into the pole in the morning, sending the pole and power lines across the street and causing a localized power failure.
The accident took place about 8:45 a.m. and one lane of Route 123 was not opened until a little before 8 p.m., and both lanes weren't free flowing until about 8:45 p.m., the police department said.
The delays were attributed to National Grid working on the utility pole and lines.
"It had to be diverted all through town, so there was quite a backup," a public safety dispatcher said Friday night of the traffic.
Two people were injured in the accident and taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, fire Lt. Al Briand said.

The injuries were described as not life-threatening, and the victims got out of the car on their own before rescue workers arrived, Briand said.
The two-vehicle accident occurred in the area of 285-287 East Main St. (Route 123). The area is west of Newland Street.
Firefighters had to have other motorists move away from the accident scene as a precaution because it was unknown at the time whether the power lines were still live or not, Briand said.
The accident occurred at the same time as several medical emergency calls, including one off Oak Street and one off Mansfield Avenue (Route 140), which required assistance from Mansfield firefighters.
