NA woman's death probed

NORTH ATTLEBORO - A 21-year-old college student and Bishop Feehan High School alumna was found dead early Thursday near the Tiber River in Rome, where she was attending classes.

The body of Karen Young, a 2005 Bishop Feehan graduate and a junior at the University of South Carolina, was found near the campus of John Cabot University, where she had recently begun a semester abroad studying business, Italian and media arts.

The cause of Young's death was listed in a USC news release as undetermined.

However, Franco Pavoncello, president of John Cabot, said in a statement that medical examinations indicated she died of natural causes. An autopsy is pending.

A written statement issued by Young's family Friday said an investigation into the cause of the 21-year-old's death is ongoing.

Young, whose address was listed by Bishop Feehan as 6 Wagon Wheel Lane, was the second student at John Cabot to die in two days.

A member of the school's soccer team was killed in a moped accident in Rome on Wednesday.

The deaths led to the cancellation of classes on Thursday, although the university remained open.

The North Attleboro student was majoring in accounting and finance at USC and was a Capstone scholar and a McKissick scholar.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of Karen Young, who was a bright and ambitious student at the university," said Pat Willer, assistant vice provost for international programs at USC.

"The South Carolina community extends its deepest sympathy to Karen's family and friends," Willer added.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Delaney and Sons Funeral Home in Walpole.
