White SUV eyed in Taunton slayings

TAUNTON - Taunton police are seeking the public's help in finding a white SUV and an unidentified female connected to the double homicide of two Taunton brothers two weeks ago.

At least four suspects are believed to have been involved in the Feb. 24 shooting of Kevin and Shawn Vargas, ages 23 and 21, in rear apartment 1 at 729 Somerset Ave., around 2 p.m., Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter said Thursday.

At least three suspects were seen entering the sport utility vehicle and then fleeing. Two suspects, one seen carrying a rifle, fled the scene onto nearby Eighth Street, while one suspect was observed on Seventh Street, according to the statement. A female was seen near the SUV.

Taunton Police are urging anyone seeing a similar vehicle to call the Taunton Police at 508-824-7522 or the District Attorney's Homicide Tip Line at 1-866-SOLVE-07.

Taunton Police also are asking anyone, especially motorists, who may have been near 729 Somerset Ave. around 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 to call the police if they observed or heard anything.

The Vargases were targeted by people that they knew, Sutter's office said. The Vargases were well known to the police.

In a 911 call at 2:10 p.m., a friend of the brothers reported they were unresponsive. The caller had just arrived after leaving work and he did not observe any suspects or hear any gunshots.

The victims were taken to Morton Hospital and Medical Center where they were pronounced dead of gunshot wounds.

Several suspects are being investigated.

A large number of tips have been provided to the Massachusetts State Police Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office and the Taunton Police Department. Investigators have followed leads to several cities and towns across Massachusetts and into other states.

A canvass of the neighborhood surrounding the crime scene led to the discovery of several witnesses who heard gunshots or observed suspicious activity in the area before and after the shooting was reported, Sutter's office said.

Over 75 interviews have been conducted with witnesses, friends, family, and other associates of the two victims. People of interest have been identified and questioned.
