Suicide note details kept private

/ STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

CUMBERLAND, R.I. - A North Attleboro businessman who police say killed his wife in an apparent murder-suicide last week in Cumberland, R.I., left behind a suicide note, but authorities won't release details of what it said.

The bodies of Norman Langelier and his wife, Beatrice, were found after an explosive house fire at the couple's home in Cumberland last Thursday morning. Police said they believe Langelier shot his wife, then died in the explosion he rigged in his home.

Langelier, 61, was president of Barber Electric Manufacturing in North Attleboro.

Police said they found a suicide note in Langelier's truck, but would not reveal what the note said or discuss any possible motives.

"Even if we found out the reasons, we would not tell the public," Cumberland Deputy Police Chief Michael Kinch said. "It does not benefit the family."

Authorities found propane tanks scattered around the house and a second note on the property that warned there were ammunition, gunpowder and explosives inside.

Police said that note saved firefighters' lives.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating how Langelier set off the explosives.

The state medical examiner's office has said Beatrice Langelier died from a gunshot wound to the head, while her husband died from multiple blunt force injuries.
