NA police crack down on school bus scofflaws

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Responding to complaints about cars illegally passing schools buses on Route 1, police have arrested two drivers in a crackdown on scofflaws.

The drivers were initially stopped for failing to stop for school buses, but were arrested after routine checks revealed other violations, such as driving without a license or outstanding arrest warrants, police Capt. Daniel Coyle said Wednesday.

A 47-year-old Cumberland, R.I., man was arrested after police stopped his pickup truck on Route 1 just south of the Route 120 intersection. John W. Alger allegedly failed to stop for the bus, but was arrested for driving without a license and driving an unregistered motor vehicle, according to court records.

Coyle said school bus drivers also are trained to write down license plate numbers of violators and officers are still out on the street watching buses.

"We're being proactive to ensure the safety of children riding the buses," Coyle said. Failing to stop for a school bus carries a $250 fine. A second-offense carries a $1,000 fine and the Registry of Motor Vehicles will suspended a license for at least six months. A third offense carries a $2,000 fine and a one-year license suspension.
