Firm to pay fine of nearly $600,000
Top Headlines The consent agreement between Saugus-based Aggregate Industries-Northeast Region and the state Attorney General's Office was entered Wednesday in Suffolk Superior Court. Aggregate could see $75,000 of the $587,000 civil penalty waived if it complies with the settlement terms, the Attorney General's Office says. A call to Aggregate's Saugus office was not immediately returned. The alleged violations occurred at the Aggregate facility at 400 Green St. in Wrentham, and in the company's other facilities in Saugus, Chelmsford, Ashland, Peabody, Waltham, Hyannis, Stoughton, Weymouth and Littleton. In Wrentham, Aggregate was accused of failing to maintain records pertaining to the sulfur content of fuel oil used in 2005 and 2006 and of operating fuel pumps without notifying the state Department of Environmental Protection. Wednesday's agreement orders Aggregate to apply to the DEP for approval of modifications the company made to several of its facilities and to burn 50 percent more natural gas in its operations, a cleaner fuel than it currently uses. The company also must reduce the amount of sulfur in the waste oil that it burns at the Saugus facility and to hire an independent auditor to assess and improve the company's environmental management system.
