Seekonk residents urged to 'green up' their electric bills

SEEKONK - The Mass Energy Consumers Alliance has mailed a letter from the Seekonk Board of Selectmen to 1,000 selected residences asking residents to join 150 households in "greening up" on their electric bills so Seekonk can earn free solar panels for one of its municipal buildings.

The town receives up to $1 in matching funds for each dollar that residents spend on clean energy. As of March 31, there is a balance of nearly $5,500 in Seekonk's Clean Energy Account that can be used for clean energy projects.

How to 'Green Up'

"Greening up" or supporting the New England Wind Fund is a way of increasing the region's renewable energy supply, reducing the carbon emissions linked to global warming, and stimulating New England's economy. To join the Seekonk Solar Challenge through the GreenUp option, residents can go online to www.MassEnergy.org, call 800-287-3950, or pick up an enrollment form at the Seekonk Public Library. Or, join the New England Wind Fund by going online to www.newenglandwind.org, calling 800-287-3950, or picking up a membership form at the library.

Small businesses are also eligible to participate in the Community Solar Challenge.

The initiative has won the support of several groups in town, including the school committee, the board of library trustees and the recycling committee in addition to the selectmen.
