Letters to the editor
Top Headlines I read an interesting interpretation of the Second Amendment of the United States. Richard Peters claims that all we have to do to control crime is remove all guns from the residents of the United States and it will be the end of crime like an aspirin stops a headache. Fat chance. The criminals would be using clubs and rocks to do their dirty work. You would have to chew your steak with your teeth and other things because the next thing would be knives. Don't forget automobiles. They are killers also. Anything that could kill should be eliminated according to this letter. If you can't control the people who have sick minds, then they will find some way to do their dirty work. While you are at it, think of how Adolf Hitler controlled Germany in his time. He eliminated all guns so the people could not resist and he got control of the country. There are factions in this country who would do the same thing if the country were disarmed. Dream in your world. I have heard this same theme from certain religious sects. It really does not make the best sense. But as my mother always said, "It takes all kinds to make a world." Charles W. Jones, Norfolk Get rid of ARA board and executive director To the editor: In response to the headline "ARA telling city to pay up" (April 26) - bull. It's time to get rid of Executive Director Michael Milanoski and the rest of the egotistical group behind him. As far as I'm concerned, (ARA vice chairman) Max Volterra and all should be replaced. The new industrial park was absolutely not a priority for this city since we had a park that was becoming less than filled. However, these people who seem to be interested in the city have only one concern as far as I can see. "If" it should happen to be successful, they are the wonderful prophets. There is absolutely no doubt this city needs re- vitalization but so far I haven't seen any earth-shaking opinions. The last one I heard was "let's build condos about four blocks from the center." Wow, how exciting for the condo owners who still have a city with empty stores. Bull with any more money for the ARA. Excuse me, but what was excactly the problem with ARA Executive Director Michael Milanoski reporting to Gary Ayrassian and the city and what makes him think that the taxpayers owe him $109,000 a year in salary? It's time to dump when they think they are indespensible. William Gallant, Attleboro WE WELCOME your letters to the editor. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number. That means, according to the Constitution, every able bodied male citizen has the right to keep and bear arms. Thankfully, so can women. If you live in a city that has disarmed its citizentry (like DC), where the criminals have guns and the police can't be everywhere all the time to protect the law-abiding, you'll be a lot less safe than if you live in a community where all the citizens can have guns and the criminals don't know who does and who does not. Studies show conclusively that gun bans do not result in a safer society. " kevin h. wrote on May 13, 2008 2:12 PM: " Spamloaf, You are something else. Have you even read the Constitution? The second amendment protects the NATURAL right to protect oneself. The government (police) cannot be everywhere to protect everyone all the time. Just look at the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. When the government systems failed, gun owners could still protect themselves and their property from those who would do them harm and steal from them. Also the second amendment protects an individual from a rogue government entity. If they were to come for someone or their property, the invaders would know that it won't be a cakewalk and that someone on their side is going to get killed. Hitler operated without the Constitutional guarantees that are the foundation of this nation. The Weimar constitution was weak and ill-conceived. Restricting access to guns to "well-regulated militias," as written in the Second Amendment, does nothing to weaken this nation or it's freedoms. After all, it's only following the letter of the Second Amendment. Of course, pro-gun types wish to conveniently forget the first half of the amendment and pretend that only the second part is the part that counts. I guess we call this selective freedoms, hmm?
