Attleboro street work moves to night time

ATTLEBORO - Downtown road work originally scheduled to take place during the day will be done at night, instead.

The job involves the installation of a natural gas main from the railroad bridge over Park Street to the intersection of North and South Main streets.

Crews from Bay State Gas are scheduled to work from about 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on a section of the road from the bridge to Bank Street.

They will work all night from Bank to North and South Main streets.

The short schedule for the section between the bridge and Bank is meant to keep noise to a minimum for downtown dwellers.

Originally, the project was to take place during the day to keep the area quiet at night, but Bay State suggested a switch because day work is likely to create a traffic nightmare in the city center and would hurt business by restricting parking.

Public Works Superintendent John Clover approved the change after conferring with Mayor Kevin Dumas.

The two agreed day work would create commuter chaos. However, they wanted to minimize disturbance at night, so they restricted work from the bridge to Bank, Clover said.

Bay State started the job this week. The entire project runs from Park Street's intersection with Pine Street to North and South Main.

Work from Pine to the railroad bridge is already being done at night.

The job was scheduled so that it won't have to be done later when the city's streetscape project is complete and the roads have been repaved.
