GIRLS' TENNIS: King Philip nets Hockomock League title

EASTON - The Hockomock League girls' tennis championship belongs to the King Philip Warriors.

KP coach Bob Goldberg and his Warriors extended their unbeaten skein to 17 matches Wednesday with a title-taking 4-1 victory at Oliver Ames.

Sarah Shipley and Lauren Trudeau won their respective No. 2 and 3 singles matches in straight sets for the Warriors. However, Trudeau battled to win a 6-4 first set, while the No. 1 doubles team of Julie Kraby and Allison Agnew were forced into winning a 7-5 set second.

King Philip (17-0, 14-0 league) will host Mansfield in a league match on Friday afternoon.

The Hornets (8-4) moved to within a win of qualifying for the MIAA Tournament after nipping Sharon 3-2, taking all three singles matches. Amanda Wolfe won a third set tiebreaker 7-2 to take her No. 2 singles match, while Mila Elich won the decisive third set of her No. 3 singles match 6-3 for the decisive point. The Hornets entertain unbeaten King Philip Friday.

The Rocketeers (11-4) gained a 4-1 verdict over Stoughton. North lost just one game in winning both doubles matches, while Michelle Lechantanski scored a straight set victory, losing just one game at No. 2 singles. The Rocketeers tangle with Foxboro Friday.

Also in the Hockomock League, (3-12) bowed 4-1 at Franklin. Lauren Fisher won a straight set match at No. 2 singles for the Warriors, who entertain North Attleboro Friday.

Liz Girczyc at second singles battled New Bedford's Jenna Leung tooth and nail, finally emerging victorious in a 7-5, 5-7, 7-4 (match tiebreaker) marathon as fell 3-2 to the Whalers in New Bedford. Now 2-11, the Bombardiers entertain New Bedford today.

In the South Coast Conference, Apponequet swept 5-0, but Vanessa Senecal gave the Lakers' Sara Pomeroy a good battle at second singles before succumbing 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Seekonk (4-7) entertains Apponequet today.
