BASEBALL: Hatch seals the deal for Lancers
NORTON - Corey Hatch cracked a game-winning RBI single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the Norton High baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Medfield in a Tri-Valley League game on Wednesday afternoon.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rick Travers began the rally with a single, followed by a walk to Ed Hannon. With two outs, Hatch laced a base hit to center, scoring Travers with the winning run.
Dave Billotte pitched a perfect top of the seventh inning to get the win for the Lancers. He got two groundouts and a strikeout in improving his record to 4-1. Ben Hastings pitched the first six innings, surrendering three earned runs and four hits. He walked three batters and struck out none.
Norton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single with the bases loaded by Devin Askew. Medfield took a brief lead with a three-run surge in the top of the fourth inning. Trailing 3-2, the Lancers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan Kirrane collected a two-out RBI single.
Norton banged out 12 singles in the game with Travers and Kirrane each collecting two. All four runs for the Lancers in the game came with two outs.
Norton (12-4, 11-4 TVL) will travel to Dover-Sherborn for a league contest on Friday afternoon.

New Bedford 9, Attleboro 8
NEW BEDFORD - The Whalers scored all nine of their runs over the first three innings and held on to beat the Bombardiers in a non-league game.
New Bedford built an 8-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the bottom of the second. Attleboro began its comeback with a run on an error in the top of the third. The Whalers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the third to take a 9-1 lead.
The Bombardiers closed the gap to 9-4 with a three-run surge in the top of the fifth. Matt Campbell cracked a two-run triple during the frame and then scored on an error to make it 9-4.
Attleboro closed within one with a four-run outburst in the top of the sixth. Campbell got things rolling with a two-run double. John Whalen then squeezed home a run with a bunt and then Jared Linhares added an RBI-single to make it 9-8. The Bombardiers had the tying run on first base when the inning ended with a flyout to center field.
However, Attleboro went down in order in the seventh to finish one run shy of New Bedford. Campbell finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs scored.
The Bombardiers (5-8) will host Dartmouth in an Old Colony League game this afternoon.

REHOBOTH - Jake Capello worked his way through danger in hurling five scoreless innings as D-R routed the Vikings in a South Coast Conference game. Capello allowed a sixth-inning run and two hits before giving way. He retired the Wareham side in order just once, that in the third inning.
However, Capello aided his own cause with three hits, while John Simmons and Josh Koneski each had two hits.
The Falcons (14-1, 11-1 SCC) travel to Bourne Friday.

FRANKLIN - Erik Machnig and Chad Todesco both uncorked pairs of doubles and both drove in pairs of runs as the Cougars (9-7, 8-6) qualified for the MIAA Tournament with the Mayflower League victory.
Mike Pothier drove in two runs with three hits for the Cougars, while Mike Corning had three hits and Dan Grillo two hits.
Greg King scattered four hits to Norfolk on the pitching mound for Tri-County. Norfolk had runners on base in every inning but the sixth against King, who walked two and struck out eight.
The Cougars return to action today at Southeastern Regional.
