ATTLEBORO - The subject of a city manhunt was ordered held in jail without bail Thursday after pleading innocent in Attleboro District Court to domestic assault, unlawful possession of ammunition and drug charges.
Samuel J. St. Angelo, 18, of 146 South Ave. in Attleboro, was sought by police in a massive search Wednesday involving a state police helicopter and police dogs because authorities feared he was armed.
But St. Angelo's lawyer, Brian Roman of North Attleboro, argued his client should be released on bail, saying the police made a "big production" out of the manhunt in what started out as a domestic dispute. He argued no one saw his client with a gun and no weapon was recovered.
The series of events was set off around 2 a.m. Wednesday when police were flagged down on North Main Street by the father of St. Angelo's girlfriend. He told officers his daughter called him on his cellphone to say she was assaulted by St. Angelo, according to court records.
Police responded to the apartment of the girlfriend, Stephanie Caruso, 20, of 13 Hillcrest Drive in Attleboro, where they say they found nine rounds of .45-caliber ammunition in a nightstand, a marijuana plant and drug paraphernalia in a bedroom.
Roman said the rounds of ammunition police found are possibly "duds" and noted that the girlfriend was also charged.
According to court records and police, Caruso will be summoned to court at a later date for unlawful possession of ammunition and marijuana possession-related charges.
Caruso told police she had been struck in the leg by St. Angelo, but declined medical treatment. Police chased a man they believed to be St. Angelo that night but he eluded them.
Around 4 p.m., police began the massive search after they learned from witnesses and residents of the Hillcrest Oaks public housing project that St. Angelo was known to carry a gun, prosecutor Jessica Lennon said.
State and local police and two state police dogs apprehended St. Angelo around 7:30 p.m., hiding in bushes behind an automotive repair business at 807 South Main St. near St. Stephen's Cemetery.
Lennon asked Judge Robert E. Baylor to revoke his bail on a previous case and order him held in jail without bail. The probation department is also seeking a probation violation hearing.
He is due back in court June 24. |
