NA pedal power to honor Meghan
Top Headlines The second annual Pedal Power event, a 5-mile children's bike ride to raise money for the Jimmy Fund and Boston Children's Hospital, will be held 10 a.m. to noon Sunday in Lindsey Acres. The ride will start and end at the family home of 11-year-old Meghan Duffy, an 11-year-old who died in September after a long battle with cancer. Meghan, along with her friend Maddy Thursby, organized the first Pedal Power ride through the neighborhood last summer, during which 125 riders raised $31,000. Most of the riders were children, including classmates, neighbors and friends of the Duffy family. This year participants hope to raise at least $40,000 to donate to pediatric cancer programs in Meghan's memory. The inspiration for the ride came from the Duffy family's long-standing participation in the Pan Mass Challenge, an adult version of Pedal Power. Both Meghan's and Maddy's parents, Colleen and Frank Duffy and Maura and Mike Thursby, will ride in the 2008 PMC to honor Meghan's life and battle with cancer. The Martin School fifth-grader was beloved by her fellow students and is remembered for her humor, bravery, artistic talents and love of reading. The library at the Martin School was dedicated in her honor earlier this year. All North Attleboro Middle School and Martin School students are eligible to ride the loop around the Lindsey Acres neighborhood, which begins at 185 Debora Road. A registration fee of $20 per rider includes a T-shirt, registration gifts and barbecue at the end of the ride, and participants are asked to collect money from sponsors as well. Registration and fundraising forms are available on the event's Web site meghanspedalpower.com.
