KP boys top picks for tennis all-stars

ATTLEBORO - Eight area boys' high school tennis teams qualified for the MIAA Tournament this season - all but one school that takes to the courts locally - thus signifying a bounty of tremendous talent on display for the 2008 season.

Four members of the Hockomock League runner King Philip High Warrior teams and pairs of North Attleboro High Rocketeers, Bishop Feehan Shamrocks and Mansfield High Hornets highlight the selections to The Sun Chronicle's all-star boys' tennis team.

Hockomock League MVP Lucas DeForest of North Attleboro High, the non-pareil James Bensson of Attleboro High School. and King Philip High's No. 1 singles player for the past two seasons Duncan Yarworth are joined on the elite 14-man roster by another returning All-Sun Chronicle selection, Rocketeer Matt Pereira.

It was a season in which a trio of doubles players were so dominant and so successful, they were virtual locks for points for their teams - Mansfield High's tandem of Jordan Sandberg and Jeremy Carroll, who won 16 matches; Bishop Feehan's High's twosome of Mark McGwin and Ben Laliberte, who won a dozen matches; and King Philip High's Jake Archibald and Alex Huth, who won 17 matches.

Also selected to the "dream team" roster for their accomplishments during the 2008 campaign were Dighton-Rehoboth High's two-time No. 1 singles player, Nate Fuller; Foxboro High's producer of 16 wins at the No. 2 spot, Ben Young; Harrison David of King Philip High, who took home 17 wins; and the lightning rod for Norton High's advancement to the MIAA Tournament, Pat Hillman.

The four repeat selections once again had special seasons - DeForest totaling 31 wins over the past two years, playing at the No. 1 spot for three seasons; the Brown University-bound and AHS valedictorian Bensson, the composer of a 36-5 slate as a junior and senior at No. 1 singles; Pereira, who so ably won 32 matches over the past two seasons in the No. 2 spot on the Rocketeer ladder; and Yarworth, who ever-expanded his game to produce 26 wins in his two years at the No. 1 spot for KP.

The Shamrocks of Bishop Feehan under coach Dustin Demers and Lancers of Norton High under coach Courtney Schwarz had stunning seasons. Bishop Feehan, the No. 12 seed in the Division 2 South field, winning two rounds and advancing to the quarterfinals; Norton, the No. 13 seed, also in the Division 2 Tournament, winning 12 matches overall, starting the season with six straight wins.

In addition, Courtney Puddester King Philip High Warriors won 18 matches overall, suffering a third loss on the season to Hockomock League rival Sharon in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 South Tournament. With DeForest and Pereira picking up points, No. 12 seeded North Attleboro (the winner of 15 matches overall) won a post-season match, while in that same Division 1 field, Attleboro (nine wins), Dighton-Rehoboth (10 wins) and Mansfield (11 wins) also qualified for the postseason.
