Last modified: Sunday, June 29, 2008 1:19 AM EDT GOBIS: King Philip mourning death of track star BY PETER GOBIS / SUN CHRONICLE STAFF The King Philip Regional High athletic family is in mourning with the passing of one of the Warriors' all-time great athletes and trackster Lexia Calzaretta, who died Monday after battling cancer for 15 years. Calzaretta, a member of the class of 1988 at KP, later participated in track at the collegiate level at Boston University and was a member of the inaugural class of inductees into the KP Athletic Hall of Fame. Also a three-year starter in goal for the field hockey team, Calzaretta held the KP shot put record, won a New England title in the event, competed in the other weight events and ran the hurdles. "She was a ferocious competitor, but an even better person," said KP girls' track coach Peter Boucher, who was a student at KP at the time. The Class of 1988 class president Doug Berry, mentioned that "she was a great friend in high school and later in life. She had a love of life, an unbelievable competitive nature, and an extraordinary sense of humor. She used all of that and more to battle cancer for 15 years until there were no more medical options. She will be missed by all of those she touched." ... Goal-scoring great Kelsey Mahoney, the senior striker for Jeff White's Dighton-Rehoboth High girls' soccer team and also a member of the winter and spring track teams, was named the Falcons' Female Athlete of the Year. She'll be attending Stonehill College ... Former Mansfield High track great, distance runner Ryan Collins, placed second in the 5000-meter run at the USA Junior National Championships at Ohio State last Friday, qualifying for the World Championships in Poland next month. Collins had qualified for the USA Meet by running at 14:12 time at the Penn Relays ... Seekonk High superstar athlete Bobby Jeannotte, the junior centerfielder for the Warriors (and also running back-defensive end for the football team), not only batted .360 in the leadoff spot for the baseball team, but scored 30 runs ... The congregation of Bishop Feehan High students - Janelle McNeil, Meg Looney, Trenna Schmitt and Elaine Martin - assembled for the NIKE Invitational Meet in North Carolina, did not fare very well competing in the sprint medley, compiling a 4:13 time overall. McNeil, however, did run at 58.9 second split ... At the breakup dinner for Jeremy Nodelman's North Attleboro High boys' lacrossse team, goalie Dan Reiffarth received the "Defensive MVP" award and was named co-captain-elect for the 2009 team with midfielder Aaron Lawing. Mike Curran was the "MVP" award winner, Kyle Bainton was the "Offensive MVP" and the "Most Improved" award went to first-year defender Jason Dobbins ... The "Most Improved" member of Peter Lacasse's Attleboro High girls' track team was sprinter Meghan Hathaway. Emily Lukin, a member of the record-setting 4x800 and 4xmile relay teams was the Bombardier MVP, while freshman Meghan Cutler, who ran a 2:23 in the 800 and was a member of the record-setting 4x400 relay team was the Rookie of the Year ... Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High boys' track coach Dave Moura announced that Bobby Ceurvels was the Falcons' MVP on the season. Middle distance runner Ryan Bezner and sprinter Matt Gaudet were the co-running MVP's, while jumper Brian Espinosa was the field MVP ... At the Complete Player Basketball Camp at the Mansfield Sportsplex, good news for Bishop Feehan High boys' hoop coach Matt Freeman as sophomore guard Michael Adams and incoming 6-foot-4 freshman Brenden Fawler, via the St. John's School, were both tremendously impressive ... The middle of the Mansfield infield, second baseman Andrew Doherty (.385) and shortstop Jimmy Gilmore (.381)performed beyonds expectations at the plate for Hornet coach Tim Graham ... Northeastern University-bound sprinter-jumper Elijah Harris was the North Attleboro High boys' spring track team's leading point-taker with 115 ... Captains-elect for the Norton High boys' tennis team next spring will be singles player Pat Hillman and doubles player Mike Ahern ... Senior righthander Alex Price had quite a season for Glen Conlon's Foxboro High baseball team, finishing with a 4-2 record and a 1.90 ERA ... Junior midfielder Doug Cockcroft, who won 62 percent of faceoffs taken for the Mansfield High boys' lacrosse t eam, received the Hornets "Unsung Hero" award and will be a tri-captain for the 2009 team with midfielder Zach Hastings and long-short stick midfielder Ryan Burke ... Kudos to Attleboro High girls' basketball coach Mike Riley and his wife Pamela on the birth of a new hoopster in the family, Jordyn ... North Attleboro's young hotshot golfer Eric Marchetti won the New England Junior Titleist Tournament held at the Gannon Golf Course in Lynn. Competing in the 13-year old division, Marchetti had a score of 73 after 17 holes, when the horn sounded after lightning struck the course. Eric was declared the winner with a front nine score of 36 ... Former Friar forward Ruben Garces has been invited to the San Antonio Spurs rookie-free agent camp ...
