Buchholz continues dominance of IL

PAWTUCKET - It had to end somewhere for Clay Buchholz - his streak of scoreless innings, that is.
The hard-throwing and highly touted Red Sox pitching prospect extended his unscored upon streak of innings to 17 through three games in an 10-1 victory for the Pawtucket Red Sox over Richmond Wednesday at McCoy Stadium before an audience of 7,162.
Fans saw a strong and superb performance by Buchholz, who retired after 62/3 innings of work.
"It was a real good outing, he pitched," said PawSox manager Ron Johnson of Buchholz' craft. "I liked his composure on the mound."
Buchholz was aided in winning his third game with the PawSox by a pair of solo homers to right field off the bat of catcher George Kottaras, a pair of bases-loaded walks in a five-run fourth inning, a pair of doubles by left fielder Bryan Pritz and a pair of dazzling double plays.
It all added up to the sixth straight win for the IL-North Division-leading PawSox.
Buchholz, consistently in the 93-94 mph range, threw 87 pitches, 57 for strikes and struck out seven batters. He had just one 1-2-3 frame, in the second inning, yielding five hits overall.
"When I need to throw a pitch, I can throw it," said Buchholz. "I didn't feel like I had a lot of energy the first few innings, but I have a lot more confidence."
While he allowed the Braves' leadoff batter to reach base in the fourth and fifth innings, second baseman Joe Thurston initiated a double play with a great stab of a grounder behind second in the fourth, while right fielder Sean Danielson plucked off a looping liner in the fifth inning and relayed to Jeff Bailey at first base for another double play.
"When he had to make a quality pitch, he did it," added Johnson of Buchholz. "When you look at a player's development, where Buc is at right now, it's really good to see that composure on the mound."
Buchholz' unscored upon streak ended at 17 though as he yielded a solo homer to Richmond's Barbaro Canizares to lead off the seventh inning. He recorded pairs of strikeouts in the second and seventh innings and issued a pair of walks.
"You never got that feeling when he walked a guy or got down on the count, I'll make a quality pitch and make things happen," added Johnson in his praise.
Buchholz had thrown six scoreless innings (allowing six hits) against Louisville and five scoreless innings (allowing one hit) against Columbus in his previous two starting assignments. Having joined the PawSox on a rehab assignment May 25, Buchholz has allowed just seven earned runs over seven games.
Buchholz had plenty of offensive support as Kottaras socked a one-out homer in the fourth inning and a leadoff homer in the fifth inning, giving him 14 on the season and 42 RBI.
Pritz put the PawSox ahead with his first double, a two-run producer in the second inning, while both Thurston and Jed Lowrie drew bases-loaded walks in the fifth inning
