LEGION BASEBALL: Post 312 outduels Swansea
ATTLEBORO - Not even Nate Koneski, who finished the season 11-0 for Dighton-Rehoboth while allowing just one earned run all year in 692/3 innings, could prevent South Attleboro's Legion team from picking up another win Thursday night.
Post 312 defeated the talented left-hander 3-0 to improve their record to 8-0-1 overall, while Swansea Post 303 fell to 5-5-1.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning. Lon Bornstein led the inning off with a single, and after Koneski got an out Ryan Lee hit a opposite-field home run to give South Attleboro a lead they would not relinquish. Lee finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate.
Post 312 added to its lead in the fifth. Kevin Connolly led off with a single before Paul Piatelli eventually drove him in with a single of his own to increase the South Attleboro lead to 3-0.
Matt Boulter also had a good day at the plate for Post 312, going 2-for-3.
Koneski was out-dueled by Luke Gagne for South Attleoboro. Gagne went the distance, allowing two hits, walking five and striking out six.
If it weren't for Luke Bomback, Gagne may have had a no-hitter. Bomback had the only two hits of the day for Swansey, going 2-for-5 at the plate.
South Attleboro travels to North Kingston, R.I., tomorrow to take part in an eight-team tournament featuring teams from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Foxboro 7, Norwood 6
NORWOOD - Foxboro took a four run lead in the first inning, fell behind 6-4, then scored three runs in the games final two innings to escape with a victory over Norwood at Balch Field.
Down 6-4 in the top of the sixth, John Ford scored on a wild pitch and Anthony Pignone scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at six.
Then, in the top of the seventh, Brian Swanton was asked to do something he had never done in his baseball career, bunt. Swanton did so beautifully, placing a bunt down the third base line that the third baseman then threw over the head of the first baseman, allowing pinch runner Shawn Jordan to advance to third. Ford then his a deep sacrifice fly to bring in the winning run.
Joe Clagg made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, putting the the go-ahead run on base twice. But solid defensive plays by Jordan and Swanton kept Norwood off the board.
Clagg pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win for Foxboro (6-3-2). Post 93 takes on Walpole on Sunday.
Seekonk 9, Taunton 4
SEEKONK - Behind four RBI from Cody Callahan, the Seekonk Legion baseball team defeated Taunton at Seekonk High School.
Bobby Jeannotte scored three runs for Seekonk, while John Simmons got a hit, walked twice, and scored two runs.
Jake Cappello went 51/3 for Seekonk, surrendering four runs on seven hits while striking out six. John Whalen game in for relief in the sixth, pitching an inning before loading the bases in the seventh with one out. Dan Nelson got out of the jam for Seekonk, forcing a double play to end the game.
