LEGION BASEBALL: Foxboro rallies for victory

FOXBORO - With the 8 p.m. deadline looming, and the score tied at six, the Foxboro American Legion baseball team appeared to be heading for yet another disappointing tie Monday night.
This one would have stung even more than Foxboro's previous two, as the normally reliable Joe Clagg had just blown his first save of the season, losing a two-run lead in the top of the seventh.
But Post 93 rallied in the final frame, and John Ford's deep sacrifice fly to left-center brought home the winning run, giving Foxboro an improbable 7-6 victory over Norfolk.
Ben Hastings led the inning off by drawing a four-pitch walk from Norfolk pitcher D.J. Goldberg. After Mike Farrell flew out to centerfield, Jeff Caparell stepped to the plate and hit a comebacker to the mound. Goldberg lunged his glove at the ball, deflecting it into the outfield. Pinch-runner Anthony Pignone aggressively went from first to third on the play, putting the winning run on third with just one out.
John Ford followed, and Norfolk chose not to load the bases with and intentional walk and put a force at every base. Ford made Norfolk pay, driving the first pitch he saw into the outfield to bring home the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
"I probably would have walked him," said Foxboro coach Billy Travers. "He had been struggling at the plate, so that's just a decision you feel. Its just one of those (decisions) that you pray you get away with it."
Foxboro fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first, as Brian Swanton struggled. Norfolk sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
"I just thought we had to answer," Travers said. "As long as we got an answer, even one run."
Post 93 did better than that, responding in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own while also sending 10 batters to the plate to tie the game.
Foxboro scored twice more in the second. Hastings's single up the middle scored Nick Thrasher who had just hit a triple, making the score 6-4 and chasing Taunton pitcher Pat Walsh from the game.
Swanton settled down after the first, going four more innings without allowing a run. Clagg relieved him in the sixth and retired Norfolk 1-2-3 before running into trouble in the seventh.
"They didn't hit the ball that hard, they just kind of hit it in the wrong spots," Travers said.
Foxboro (7-4-2) is now two games through a stretch in which it plays four games in a row. Post 93 takes take on Needham Tuesday at Foxboro High School before traveling to Medfield on Wednesday.
Swansea 6, Seekonk 5
SWANSEA - Despite just one RBI from the entire team, Swansea walked away from their meeting Monday with Seekonk with a 6-5 victory.
Swansea took advantage of sloppy defensive play from Seekonk, who committed four errors as a team.
Kevin Boff picked up the win for Swansea, pitching five innigns while allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Boff also had the team's sole RBI.
Swansea jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning, but Seekonk clawed back, eventually tying the game at five in the sixth. But in the bottom half of the inning Swansea got its leadoff man on base, then brought him home on a single and an error by the Seekonk centerfielder. Seekonk went down in order in the top of the seventh.
South Attleboro 8, Fall River 4
ATTLEBORO - The South Attleboro Junior Legion team defeated the Fall River 8-4 Monday night behind 12 team hits.
Danny Lang had three hits including a triple, while Alex Witkus and Ben Moss each added two hits for Post 312. All three players also had two RBI.
South Attleboro scored in every inning, and put up two runs in the third. Steve Pain got the win, lasting four innings while striking out five and allowing two runs, just one of them earned.
The Post 312 junior team travels to Cumberland, R.I., this weekend for the Firecracker Tournament. |
