One North Attleboro man was killed and another critically injured in separate car crashes that occurred Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning at nearly opposite ends of the state.
Albert Dickinson, of 91 Oakridge Ave., was driving on Route 7 in Williamstown, approximately 200 yards from the Vermont border, when a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe he was operating collided with another vehicle.
According to Williamstown police, a preliminary investigation indicates that Dickinson's vehicle crossed from the northbound lane into the southbound lane, striking a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Thomas Peckham, 31, of Pittsfield. The Williamstown Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit are still investigating the collision.
Police said that Peckham was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.
A message left for Dickinson's family was not immediately returned.
The second North Attleboro victim was injured when the pickup truck he was riding in Saturday morning rolled over on Interstate 495 in Plainville. Nicholas Coots, 20, was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident and was thrown from the vehicle, according to state police. Police said they found Coots in the roadway unresponsive, but breathing.
"He had serious head injuries," Fire Lt. Justin Alexander said. "He was critically injured. He is in life-threatening condition."
Matthew Bimberg, of Medway, was driving the vehicle and was not seriously injured.
Both victims were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where Bimberg was released and Coots was listed in critical condition as of late Saturday night, according to hospital personnel.
After leaving the hospital, Bimberg was arrested by the Rhode Island State Police on a fugitive warrant out of Wrentham Court on charges related to the crash, police said.
According the police, Bimberg is charged with causing serious bodily injury by motor vehicle while operating under the influence of alcohol, marked lanes violation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
The accident, which occurred just before Interstate 95 and south of Route 1, was reported at about 2:40 a.m. on Saturday. The pickup landed right side up in the middle of the highway after "rolling over multiple times," Alexander said. "It was a very bad accident."
State police said the driver was operating the 2001 Dodge Ram pickup in the left lane when he lost control of the vehicle, exited the road to the left, then re-entered the roadway and rolled over before coming to rest in the center travel lane.
Foxboro firefighters assisted at the scene and transported the most seriously injured victim to the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
Due to the investigation and vehicle removal, the left and center travel lanes of I-495 South were closed for about four hours. MassHighway also assisted in the cleanup.
Shortly after the crash, a vehicle was reported in the woods off Interstate 95 North near I-295 in Attleboro. Because state police were tied up with the Plainville accident, Attleboro police covered for them. Nobody was reported injured in that crash.
