Post 312 clinches top seed
Top Headlines After giving up two runs in the top of the seventh inning and allowing Somerset to pull even at 3-all, South Attleboro scratched for a run in the bottom of the inning, winning it on Ryan Lee's infield single with the bases loaded. Even with the recent losses, South Attleboro finished as the top seed in Zone 9 at 20-3-1. Post 312 will open its first-round, best-of-three playoff series on Sunday (2 p.m.) at Bishop Feehan High School against the sixth-place finisher, which has yet to be determined (possibly Norton, Easton or Berkley). Up against another ace, in Dean College freshman Kevin Pettine, South Attleboro managed to grab a 3-1 lead before Somerset rallied for two runs off of Lucas Gagne to tie things in the seventh. However, in the bottom of the inning Post 312 had a rally of its own, loading the bases on back-to-back singles by Mike Mancini and Lon Bornstein and an intentional walk to Gagne. Lee plated the game-winner with a hot shot to first base, the throw home not in time for the force. South Attleboro had scored once in the second on an RBI-single by James Kelly. Greg Najarian had an RBI-groundout and Gagne scored on a wild pitch in the third for the other two runs. Bornstein (3-for-4) had three of South Attleboro's seven hits. At 23-4-2 overall, South Attleboro will play Game 2 of its first-round playoff series on the road Monday evening. Seekonk 10, Fall River 8 SEEKONK - After spotting Fall River five runs in the top of the first inning, Post 311 rallied late and kept its chances of getting the second seed in the Zone 9 playoffs alive. Seekonk, 16-5-2, needs to win its game tonight (7) in New Bedford, but also needs Fall River to beat Westport to earn the second seed. Regardless, Seekonk can do no worse than third place and will have home-field advantage in its first-round, best-of-three playoff series which will start Sunday. Fall River saw its early 5-0 lead evaporate in the fifth, as Seekonk scored four times to take an 8-6 lead. Tied at 8-all in the fifth, Seekonk pushed across the two decisive runs on a Dan Charest one-out single, walks to Cody Callahan and Matt Quinn and then a fielder's choice by Chris Alves. South Attleboro Juniors 12, Fall River 3 FALL RIVER - Just a day after piling up 11 runs in a win over Seekonk, South Attleboro was back at it again with the bats in routing Fall River. Brett Mastropoll highlighted the victory with a three-run home run while Steve Paine, Ben Morse and Aidan Desrosiers all had RBI-doubles. South Attleboro finishes up its regular season Saturday afternoon (3) with a doubleheader against Fall River. Fate still in the air for Foxboro The Foxboro American Legion baseball team will have to wait until Saturday to know if they have homefield advantage in the Disctrict 6 playoffs. Norwood posted an 11-9 victory over Needham on Thursday night, locking up the second seed in District 6 West. Foxboro fell to third as a result, and will play Milton on Monday. A coin flip will determine the site.
