Cappello rescues Seekonk again

SEEKONK - Jake Cappello came through again for the Seekonk American Legion Post baseball team.

After crushing a seventh-inning home run to give Seekonk a victory and even the Zone 9 series with Swansea in game No. 2 Monday, the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High senior initiated a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to preserve an 8-5 victory Tuesday in the series clincher Tuesday.

Not only that, but Cappello drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning to force home the tying run for Seekonk.

Seekonk (18-6-2) will be the No. 2 seeded team in the District playoffs, which will begin at home on Saturday afternoon at 4 against a foe yet to be determined.

Cody Callahan was on base four times for Seekonk, via a pair of intentional walks, being hit by a pitch and reaching on an error, while Dan Charest and Cappello each clubbed a pair of hits. Karney Boff of Dighton-Rehoboth High started on the pitching mound for Swansea, working five-plus frames.

Jay DeMelo went the distance on the pitching mound for Seekonk, retiring the Swansea side in order in the second, and fourth innings, allowing seven hits overall.

However, it was in the sixth inning that Seekonk took control. Facing a 5-4 deficit, Seekonk could not afford a greater gap as Swansea loaded the bases on three straight hits. But, Cappello, stationed at first base, initiated a 3-2-4 double play with Callahan, the catcher and Jeff Olson, at second base, responding magnificently in extricating DeMelo and Seekonk from the jam.

And Seekonk fed off of the energy of that defensive gem by scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.

Bobby Jeannotte was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Charest double. Callahan was intentionally walked, setting the stage for a dramatic 11-pitch at-bat by Cappello, who drew a bases on ball to force in the fifth Seekonk run.

Two consecutive Swansea infield errors allowed two runs in, then a Chris Alves fielder's choice produced the eighth run.

Swansea had touched DeMelo for three runs in the first inning and then added solo runs in the third and fifth (on a solo homer) innings.

Westport 8, Norton 1

NORTON - Mark Barressi belted three hits, while Chris Rosa socked a pair, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning as Westport crushed Norton at Adams Field to win the best of three-game series 2-0.

Westport notched a pair of first inning runs and then broke the game open by scoring three times in the second inning. Cory Battista hurled six innings for Westport, allowing just three hits over that span.

Westport will be granted the No. 1 seed for the District playoffs.
