Be careful of lightning

If a thunderstorm is looming, or you are in the middle of one, lightning can be a critical threat. The American Red Cross says to follow these safety guidelines.

As the storm approaches:

E Find shelter, either in a car or building.

E Make sure to unplug your appliances and try not to use electronic devices.

E Try to avoid showering or running water. If you are outside during a storm:

E Make sure to stay clear of high ground; tall, solitary trees and metal objects, such as fences.

E Look for a safe building, but do not seek refuge in a dugout, shed or picnic shelter.

E If you are in water, either swimming or boating, get to land immediately.

If someone is struck by lightning:

E Immediately call 911 or the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number.

E Give first aid. If the person has stopped breathing, begin rescue breathing. If the heart has stopped, however, let a trained person do CPR.

E Look for other injuries or burns. Even though the person received an electric shock, the electrical charge is not retained and the person can be handled safely.

" I see the "E" too. Is this an eye test? "

" Skeptic: Unfortunately, the "bullets" we use at the start of each line of a list in the print edition translate in HTML as a cap-E. It's one of those quirky things in automatic text transfer that we haven't been able to fix as yet ... "
