Voters oust four school incumbents

ATTLEBORO - Voters wrote a new lesson plan for the city's schools Tuesday in ousting four incumbent school committee members and electing challengers who had campaigned for a more active role by school board members.

In a result reminiscent of 2005, when only three school committee incumbents were returned to office, voters turned out sitting school board members who had served up to a dozen years. The Ward 5 race, won by incumbent Frances Zito over newcomer David Sidman by only seven votes, appeared headed for a recount.

Newcomer James Stors took a whopping 69 percent of the vote in defeating Ward 2 incumbent Shawn Moran; Brenda Furtado scored a 71 percent win over Jackie Romaniecki in Ward 4; and former school board member Bruce Levine narrowly edged out incumbent Michael Tyler in Ward 6, taking 53 percent of the vote.

In at-large races, challengers Raymond DiCiaccio and Teri Enegren proved the top vote-getters, with incumbent Helen Johnson also elected by virtue of her third-place finish in the four-way race. Two-term incumbent and school committee Chairwoman Roberta Wuilleumier fell out of the running, more than 250 votes behind in fourth place.

Among incumbents who survived, only Ward 1's Melissa Cook prevailed with a large majority, defeating challenger George Lukin by 194 votes. Robert Hill was unopposed in Ward 3. "There seemed to be a bit of anti-incumbent feeling out there," said Stors, who defeated Moran, 546 votes to 240, of the sweeping changes on the board. "That, and the new people did a lot of work - and that hard work paid off."

Others saw a mandate for change on the school board.

"The community is really looking for change," Enegren said, adding that she believes the newly elected members will be able to work with the holdovers in a constructive posture for education.

"I think we can move in a really positive direction with a lot of teamwork," she said. "We have a lot of good people, and if everyone is level-headed, we'll be just fine."

Candidates who challenged established incumbents had attacked hard over what some described as the committee's failure to speak up to or properly supervise the school department's top administration.

Their opponents countered that schools were moving forward steadily with new programs, grants and curriculum improvements and that the school committee was not shirking its duty.

Johnson said she was "disappointed" with the election's outcome, including the loss of Wuilleumier and Romaniecki, two of the board's most experienced members.

"I don't know what they're looking for," Johnson said of voters.

She said schools were making progress on several fronts and that the school committee of the last four years has for the most part banished the dissension and bickering that was commonplace prior to 2006.

Zito said she was also saddened by the election results, but predicted the old and new members will be able to work together for the betterment of the school system. She also complimented her opponent, Sidman, as "a gentleman." Sidman said Zito had proven to be a tough opponent. Due to the close, seven-vote margin, Sidman said he plans to request a recount today.

" Sunshine(Brenda) all the best to you. You won, do you have to continue bad mouthing the women who worked for years to bring in new programs and save teachers jobs. Enough already, say thank you and start focusing on the work you need to do. One thing is growing a brain you'll need it to go head to head with DURKIN> Best wishes. For anyone who could be sucked in by a no good bi-polar jerk off like Dagasstino. You need to skrew your head on straight and get ready to deal with the superintendent. Good Luck and do a good job. "

" I knew the true colors would come out after the election . . .

to "THE WATCHER" and not "WATCHER2" (very original) I have just spoken to four people, and we are not sure how that works. Maybe there would need to be a special election, not sure. In my OPINION, because I don't know the rules, she was next in votes, so I would assume the seat would be offered to her. Or maybe there is a special election. I don't know. "

" RW move up??? How stupid can you people be???? What would make you think she would want it??? She is a highly educated woman...not some brainless floozy who wants to see her name on the front page! "

The Watcher wrote on Nov 4, 2009 2:11 PM:

" Sunshine and wilson,

I believe that RW would not move up if this were to occur. Johnson was elected by the people (perhaps because of no other choices, and the people spoke loud and clear in regards to RW. Wouldn't they have to now run a special election to fill the spot? Does the current SC appoint someone to fill the position? These are interesting quesions? "

" Sunshinesonfire you made a very good point. We don't need RW back.
Thank you "

" Wilson - that is an honorable idea, but then RW is in. I don't think that would actually be beneficial. "

" I agree with you 100%. I may come across as anti-Dr.Durkin, but truly I DO believe she has made positive changes toward improving our school systems. I know I have said many times that I DO agree with many of the educational improvements Dr. Durkin has made.

What I disagree with are things like her annual review (can be viewed in the action notes on the school website). She was given rave reviews in EVERY area. There is nothing wrong with saying: you are strong in areas A, B, and C, but lacking in areas D, E, and F. The school committee should be praising the good and giving guidance in areas that need improvement. I do not currently see that happening.

Let's face it, we would all like to have a job where we answer to noone, but that is simply unrealistic. The current school board is not currently governing our schools. "

" I don't agree entirely with many here who claim Ms. Durkin is the #1 problem. I think she has her shortcomings, but I also believe she has a lot to offer and is an accomplished professional. Sometimes her decisions are read plain wrong, instead of comprhending that some choices are painful in the short term in order to achieve long-term goals that ultimately benefit the students (even if some ill-informed and mis-guided parents disagree).

It is far from easy being a teacher, education administrator or school committee member. Sometimes I think parents have no clue as to what is involved in the educating process and are too quick to point a finger when their precious little Johnny gets called out. Yes, your little Johnny is far from perfect even if you don't see it. Sometimes parents are spot-on when they complain too, of course. If everyone involved always kept anchored to the ideal "in the best interest of the students" there would be less in-fighting, sniping and problems. Lead by example folks, your children are watching and listening . . . "

sunshinesonfire wrote on Nov 4, 2009 9:01 AM:

" I think that was the biggest error on the part of the current school committee. They were so busy showing their united front and team mentality that they forgot they get voted in to their positions. They were to busy praising and defending the superintendant, rather than truly address the concerns of the parents.

Our middle school students went six weeks without snack last year: that is six weeks of parents calling the school committee, the principals, the teachers, the superintendant, the MAYOR's office! And all that time, the school committee did nothing but keep tabling to the next meeting, hoping the raucus would die down.

Helen Johnson, here is what the voters are looking for: Parents want to know they are well represented. "

" I do recall a popular former (now deceased) mayor --who happened to be extremely educated and intelligent.. telling people that Attleboro was anti intellectual. if you wanted to serve in Attleboro, you should never admit to having an education...especially on the school committee...thought that had changed. Eliminate two most highly trained educators with intent of eliminating one of the most internationally recognized educational leaders from their employment... "

" Ms Johnson said " I don't know what they're looking for, " Johnson said of the voters. Well let me tell you. Maybe you should find out fast or you will be voted out. The Private Club is now over for the School Committee.
You will now have to answer to the people for your actions. "

" Attleboro has spoken.... no more teachers and administrators leaving because of the dictator we have ruling this district. 10 principals in 2 year. Our city needs to have a long term view and keep people like Matt Joseph and some of the other newer administrators. Did you see all the progress Hill-Roberts has made T(12 point improvement in ELA and top scores for math and ELA)? No because the news was always about tunover. "
