A dangerous distinction

Five area intersections among worst in state
In less than a two-mile drive along Route 152, a motorist can pass through two of the state's most dangerous intersections, according to a state report.

As the site of 74 crashes during a three-year period, the intersection of routes 1 and 152 in Plainville was ranked as the 18th most dangerous intersection in the state, according to the state Department of Transportation's "Top High Crash Locations Report."

The ranking makes the intersection the most dangerous in the Attleboro area.

The report covers accidents that happened from 2005 to 2007 at intersections across the state.

The data is gathered from local and state police reports submitted to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

The report ranks the 200 most dangerous intersections by the number of accidents, while giving extra weight to those crashes that result in injuries or fatalities.

With five lanes in each direction on Route 152 and three on each side of Route 1, the intersection near Lowe's Home Improvement is a conduit of a vast amount of traffic every day.

"There's a lot of moving parts down there," interim Plainville Police Chief James Alfred said.

Alfred said the bulk of the accidents his department sees are motorists trying to take an illegal left turn from Route 1 onto Route 152 South.

The intersection had a left turn lane several years ago, but it was removed and replaced with a turn-around lane on the right side.

Alfred said many motorists ignore the warning signs and try to make the left turn, anyway.

"There are several signs that say 'No Left Turn' there," he said. "We've written hundreds of tickets."

Of the 74 accidents, 31 have resulted in injuries, according to the report.

Plainville is also home to the state's 50th most dangerous intersection where Route 152 runs into Messenger Street.

The intersection is in a high commerce area, Alfred said, and numerous business driveways often lead to confusion and accidents.

There were 80 total crashes at the intersection in the three year period, with 21 resulting in injuries, according to the report.

He said the accidents are typically rear-end collisions, and occur when motorists try to cut across multiple lanes.

Alfred said the intersection has also seen several accidents in which a driver taking a left turn is waved through by a motorist in the inside lane, while someone driving in the outside lane doesn't see the vehicle turning until it's too late.

"The bottom line is that whenever you're turning, you've got to be able to see who's coming," he said.

While Plainville was the only area town to have two intersections on the list, other communities did have intersections crack the Top 200.

With traffic flooding into and out of the Mayfaire Center shopping plaza, the intersection of Route 1 and May streets in Attleboro was in a tie for 82nd on the list.

The intersection, near Uno's Restaurant and a Stop & Shop supermarket, was the site of 69 accidents in the three-year span, 19 of which involved injuries.

The most dangerous intersection in North Attleboro during the time period was the junction of Route 1 and Chestnut streets, according to the state's list.

During the three-year span, the intersection saw 52 accidents, with 19 resulting in injuries, including one that was a fatality.

The intersection was ranked the 105th most dangerous in the state.

The intersection of School Street and Route 140 in Mansfield also made the list, tied for 143rd place. The intersection has seen an increase in traffic with the opening of two major shopping centers, and also connects the town's industrial park with Interstate 495.

The intersection saw 68 total accidents during the three-year span, with 14 resulting in injury.

" One of the biggest problems facing us in the near future is GPS. My 2 year old GPS told me to turn left when I was travling North on Rt. 1. I then paid $80 to upgrade the map, now it tells me to turn use the off ramp. Maybe we need a law on automatic upgrdable maps for GPS units. "

" How about if you realize you missed the 100000 signs saying no left turn, instead of trying to risk it anyways you just safely drive down route 1S and turn around when it's safe. Or you can still receive the fingers and horns at all of the mad drivers stuck behind you or almost hitting you. "

" I think they did a terrible job "fixing" the Rt. 1 and 152 intersection. The lanes coming from Rt. 1 don't line up with the lanes on 152 (if you follow the lanes, the left turn lane into Lowes and the side street after it have you weaving out of the right lanes). One big fix would be to have the left lanes into Lowes islanded off and only one of the lanes crossing Rt 1 go south onto 152. One of my biggest gripes is to pretend there are 2 lanes going into a street or highway, when there really is only 1 and expect that drivers won't try and force each other off the road rather than yeild to one another (the right turn lane into Stop and Shop on Pleasant Street is an example) Turn lanes should be enforced with curbs or islands rather than just lines. "

What a waste of taxpayer money... "

" I will concede that there are always exceptions to every rule and that my commments are based on my general observations, BUT, I do commute over 60 miles M-F and MOST times that I see something dumb, it is usually a foreign-looking driver, typically identifiable to me by their shade of skin color, along with the other 8 people in the car, further confirmed by the foreign flag hanging from the rear view mirror, and/or the numerous bumper stickers in a language that I can not read affixed to their dented rear bumper that is on a beat up sedan with 2 different color fenders. Ya, I know...how could I say such a thing? Even if it's not true, we should all be politically correct. "

" Thanks for enlightening me lonicutter. It always goes back to the illegal aliens, lol. Next time you're driving behind a fair skinned, blue eyed, teenager or an older person for that matter ask them for their passport. It's not the foreigners moron! It's your average AMERICAN that don't know how to drive on YOUR roads. "

" Across the country, we have seen a new generation of drivers on the road. A generation who have not grown up in America, who have not had the experience of riding in the car with their parents all of their lives, learning the unwritten rules of the road. These unwritten rules are what you and I would understand as "being courteous" to our fellow driver, but sadly, most of these "new" drivers have been brought up in countries where they are used to riding a mule to the market. There are no directionals on a mule, nor do they have marked lanes on the dirt path down to the village. There is a new generation of drivers that pose a danger everytime they get behind the wheel because they have little or no experience on our roads. I have never seen so many people running red lights, getting cut off, or blocking the lane of traffic waiting to get out of an intersection. Most don't understand what they are doing wrong because they never learned. "

" People are generally just like sheep. They need direction. Sure, there are always one or two that lead the flock but many will end up in the jaws of the wolf. Those are the ones you constantly see sitting in the middle of Rt1 crossing in front of other cars. "

" People need to stop on red. I've seen people turn left on Rt 1 from Rt 152, after the green arrow changed to red, as if they think it's okay to go. It's not safe behavior to do that. "

" Writing tickets never solves anything. What idiot came up with that turn-a-round lane in Plainville? Seriously? If you're not from Plainville you won't even know it's there until after you pass it. THEN WHERE DO YOU TURN? All along Rt 1 there are few if any right and left turn signals. Why is that? Why do those geniuses that design these heavily travelled roads never consider the traffic? Take a look at the intersection on Rt 1 and Rt 123 (Highland Ave). If you're coming off of Highland Ave onto Rt 1 towards the mall there is no left turn signal. But there is one on the opposite side. People don't grow new brains. So they keep using their small brains and pull into the middle of Rt1 trying to sneak across. Geniuses?????? "

" Maybe if law enforcement sat at intersections and wrote tickets for running lights, not yeilding, or not using turn signals instead of sitting on straight aways collecting revenue the intersections would be less dangerous. "
