Reps to take pay cut

State representatives are taking a voluntary pay cut to help with the state's budget problems.

The lawmakers said they have volunteered to have their salaries reduced the equivalent of five days' pay.

The cut coincides with a mandatory five-day furlough of House employees.

The House members could not be mandated to take a pay cut because their salaries are set by statue.

Local representatives said they willingly went along with the voluntary reduction that Rep. Bill Bowles estimated at about $1,200. "In my mind, you can't ask aides to take a furlough if you're unwilling to do it," said Bowles, D-Attleboro.

"It's a great idea. I think it's a good gesture. It shows we are willing to share the pain," Rep. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, said.

Other representatives said they felt obliged to do their part at a time when state services were being slashed. The savings will be an estimated $600,000.

"This is the worst economic recession in over a generation. It's only fair that staff and members of the House share in the sacrifices that are necessary for us to get through this," said Rep. Steve D'Amico, D-Seekonk.

Although the pay cut is being called a furlough, the lawmakers said they will continue working their regular hours and not take time off to compensate.

"I can't take five days off. We're working all the time," said Rep. Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro.

Poirier said a legislator's work goes well beyond the short amount of time the House is in formal session taking votes.

She said there are committee meetings, public hearings, and, most of all, constituent problems to deal with all the time.

Gov. Deval Patrick has made extensive cuts to the budgets of departments in the executive branch, but lacks the authority to trim legislative spending.

House leaders said the furloughs were their way of contribution to the reductions. "We all have to tighten our belts," said Rep. Jay Barrows, R-Mansfield.

" Sorry, Denau (or is it denau with a small d?),

No excuses, except I went to a liberal government school. We didn't get too much writing, reading,'rithmetic. We got a lot of liberal ideology, diversity, gay rights, and all that kind of crap. But, I'll truly try to do better with the spelling in the future. "

" Hello '' abcd'' Welfare folks are using very little in comparision to the Corrupt FAT CATS in Washington and the CEO's of large Corps; they walking away with Millions as corps are loosing money. Propaganda about Welfare folks is used to take are eyes of the truely GREEDY folks where the really large sums of cash are flowing away from us. If we do the math it takes thousands of poor Welfare folks to equal what one greedy BIG WIG walks away with. Americans wake up, do math and realize who the true theives are..... I do begrudge folks getting handouts, as I have never received any. But who knows any day one of us could fall victim to bad times and need help. Lets face it 500 $ a month isnt living high. But ''They'' say hey Mary is stealing 6,ooo on Welfare. While you watch Mary, then Joe:Govt Joe:Corp america are taking millions & mllions $$$$.... "

" Try working in the private sector where we've had two paycuts, layoffs and increase in hours. FIVE DAYS PAY is nothing!!! Are we supposed to be greatful for this paltry reduction? Eliminate the pork in the benefits we give to these reps. Health benefits for life is a travesty and should be eliminated. Bring them in line with the rest of us suckers who travel through life in coach! "

" This story brought tears to my eyes. So sad. These poor folks (pols) work so, so, hard screwing taxpaying workers, it's truely a shame they need to feel obligated to take a cut. Maybe they just might have a conscience after all. Naw, that's near impossible. Most of them are liberals. They (liberals) have no moral compass. "

" They may as well take every penny the law allows and then some.

As far as I am concerned, all incumbents must go. "

" Time to put these elected officials on permanent furlough. News for you lucky it is the social welfare programs that are killing this country as well. Plus this total fraud of a stimulus for which my kids will be responsible for. But at least Bob Kraft gets his 9 million dollar bridge for a 12000 political contribution to these elected officials who have not one ounce of integrity. "

" Its heart warming !! to see those folks are willing to helpout in these tough financial times. Thats what I call INTEGRITY. Need more folks like these folks. Now we need all those folks that made Multi-multi-multi millions during that greedy corrupt decade to pitch in at the same rate. Afterall it was their Greed and Corruption that destroyed us, but no them. "
